Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r)

Dear Jorge:

The Church officially recognizes only the names of three Archangels, Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael (who are mentioned in the Bible). Other names of angels come from apocryphal or other non-Biblical sources.

There is mention of Seven Angels in Revelation 8:2 - "Then I saw the seven angels who stand before God..." but the Scripture does not name them.

The apocryphal 1 Enoch 20 lists the archangels as: Uriel, Raphael, Raguel, Sariel, Gabriel, and Remiel (plus Michael make seven). But, Enoch has been rejected by the Church and is not legitimate Scripture.

It is said by some that Pope Gregory the Great (6th century) gave a list of Archangels as Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Simiel, Oriphiel and Zachariel, but if he did give such a list it was his personal opinion, not an official teaching.

I am told that the Eastern Orthodox Church tradition venerates Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Uriel, Selaphiel, Jegudiel, and Barachiel.

Since there is a threat of angel-worship and abuse of angel teachings (St. Paul warns of this in Col. 2:18), the Catholic Church only recognizes the names of the Archangels given in the Bible.

There are probably millions of Archangels, we have no way of knowing. All we know is that Scripture mentions seven archangels, but only names three.

The New Age and occult follows have adopted these apocryphal names of angels and made them their own. There is a great deal of angel worship and superstition, especially of Uriel, among these people.

We should restrict our own understanding and certainly our veneration to those three angels named in the Bible: Michael, Gabriel, Raphael.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
