Desire to become Catholic Eugene Friday, July 15, 2011

Question:

Dear Brother

My story is a long one, but to summarize: I was raised in the Lutheran Church, left at age 18, almost joined the Jehovas Witnesses. Left the JW and was in a period of no religion. Then got interested in the occult, had friends etc who was into it quite deeply. During this time I became very ill and doctors cannot diagnose the cause.

I also struggle with homosexuality since I was a child. I also had a period where I wanted to become a Hare Krishna. I have no more ties with the occult or any of the people, but I'm still sick.

The past year I have this desire to be a Catholic and I can stare at the Eucharist for hours and almost cry. I know God called me to become a preacher, but I know I cannot become a priest in the catholic church cause I'm gay. It feels like my life is in shambles. Please help me.

Question Answered by

Dear Eugene:

God loves you and so does the Church. I praise God that you are wanting to come into the Church Jesus founded.

To join the Church you need to contact a local parish and express your desire to the pastor. You can then attand classes, which usually start in September, to prepare you for Confirmation (I assume you have already been baptized). Then next Easter you can be confirmed and enter into the Eucharistic life. Believe me, as a convert myself, it is well worth the wait.

As for homosexuality I recommend that you contect a great organization called Courage. That group can help you with your struggles and with living a Godly life in spite of your struggles.

As for the priesthood, while you may not be able to be a priest, God does have something for you to do.

Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman, who was also a convert, said:

"Everyone who breathes, high and low, educated and ignorant, young and old, man and woman, has a mission, has work. We are not sent into this world for nothing; we are not born at random...God see every soul, He lodges it in the body, one by one, for a purpose, He needs, He deigns to need, every one of us. He has an end for each of us; we are all equal in His sight, and we are placed in our different ranks and stations, not to get what we can out of them for ourselves, but to labour in them for Him. As Christ has his work, we too have ours; as He rejoiced to do His work, we must rejoice in ours also."

You will find your "work".

Welcome to the Church.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
