Hell and The Devil Xavier Saturday, March 26, 2011

Question:

What do you think about this? My child was told by his catechist on Sunday that Hell doesn't exist and that the Devil isn't real. I spoke to the head catechist about this and was told that it isn't Church teaching, but his personal belief. I am considering switching to a Protestant church where my child will hear the truth. However, my child loves the Catholic church and does not want to change. Also, he has been having nightmares. Do you have any suggestions?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r)

Dear Xavier:

You need to report this catechist to the pastor. It is a heresy to deny the existence of hell and the devil. This person must be fired from his position. If the pastor will not do anything about it, then contact the Bishop.

I encourage you to not allow your child to go to a Protestant church. If you do that you will be endangering your child's Catholic faith. You will be held accountable before God if that happens. The Protestant churches do not hold the fullness of the faith, and while much of the faith is the same, they do not teach total truth -- some falsehoods are part of Protestant belief.

Canon Law says that we have a right to be taught the faith correctly. We can demand that from our pastors and we have a right to make formal complaints if the pastors fail to do this. Exercise your rights as Catholic. Demand that your child be taught the faith properly by those who actually believe the faith. Do not take no for an answer.

If it were me, I would immediately call the pastor to let him know that happened and what the catechist said. Do not take this lying down.  If it were me, I would demand that this heretic be fired immediately. There is no excuse for such a person to be in position to poison our children's faith.  If no resolution is made immediately, I would call the bishop. This is serious.

Jesus said,  "...but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened round his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea" (Matthew 18:6).

We will be praying for you, your child, and this whole situation -- especially that the catechist be removed from office and be re-educated in hopes that he will repent of his heresy.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
