Question:

Hello there! I have a question concerning some recent activities. First some background.

I was baptized Catholic, received First Reconciliation, First Communion, and was confirmed into the Church. For reasons in this day I can hardly explain, when I was fourteen I broke away from the Church. Not only did I break away from the Church, but I also broke away from God. Yes, I became an atheist and this persisted for about 3 years until I felt spiritually pulled, but was still in anger with Christianity entire, so I got into Buddhism for about another year, and then pulled away from that when I tried meditation and even succeeded! That is, I remember once deep in meditation for some unexplainable reason I burst out of trance and began laughing hysterically for about five minutes without stopping, or being able to stop.

Regardless of what seemed to be "meditative success," I still did not feel spiritual truth. So I went about afterward being a believer in God but still not a Christian. I made many friends and read much literature; my intelligence, knowledge, and philosophical wariness grew exponentially during this period.

Then one day I began having revelations. I began feeling intensely Christian in leaning albeit I couldn't believe it. I did not even initiate this myself! It was as if a supernatural force was taking seizure of my soul and directing me to the right path and all of a sudden faith hit me like a baseball to the nose. I began believing, even to a radical level. I began reading the Bible from start to finish (I have always been familiar extensively with Biblical stories as I was attending Catholic education from age 4 to 18, but never actually went through it all).

Since then I have had a radical shift in my entire life, feeling immensely terrible for what I once thought was not at all a big deal (masturbation), and started revering the Ten Commandments to a level I hope soon to achieve as absolutely orthodox and unyielding.

I am soon to return to the Catholic Church, and as such have been professing defenses of it. Since then, certain friends have stopped calling me. I have been vigorously assaulted for my faith, even so far that one friend even told me "please don't be a Christian, you're too intelligent for that" proceeding to claim that Christianity is "a corrupt hybrid of Irish Druidism and Egyptian religion." Basically a lot of new age "intellectual" garbage, which I quickly refuted.

Point is, radical shifts are occurring and friends seem to be drifting. Some have even tried to force me to believe I am homosexual, while I currently have a girlfriend, have always been straight, and strongly anti-gay marriage! They are probably homosexual themselves hoping I will be. But it sounds to me like demons are desperate to find any way to make me defy God now. It seems I am under severe attack, as people mock me (mostly atheists/satanists). I do not care. I am not here to be liked. Only to love God. What is your opinion on this? Please help!

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r)

Dear Ryan:

I praise God that you are returning to the Church. Welcome back.

What you are describing is exactly as you stated it: "demons are desperate to find any way to make me defy God".

You are under such attack because you belonged to the demons before and have escaped. Demons really do not like that. Thus, they will go all out to attack you to try to keep you in their grips. You must not allow them to do that.

Persevere in the faith. If friends or family leave you, persevere in the faith. If ridiculed and reviled, persevere in the faith. If all forms of persecution and derision come your way, persevere in the faith.

Jesus said:

(Matthew 5:11-16)  "Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you.

"You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trodden under foot by men.

"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven."

Rejoice Ryan, for you are being blessed by such persecution. Let the light of the Holy Spirit within your shine forth ever brighter because of the attacks upon you.

The demons know the blessing that comes from this. That is why they will work overtime to convince you to hide your faith, and eventually to lose it.

(James 4:7-8a)  "Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and he will draw near to you."

Count these experiences as blessings and continue to move toward greater and greater intimacy and friendship with God. You will not regret it.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
