Culpability & Ignorance Alex Tuesday, March 22, 2011

Question:

Brother,

I know we have an obligation to learn the faith, and therefore ignorance is (usually) not an excuse with sinful acts. But what about when someone accidentally dabbles in the occult? For example, if a young girl plays with tarot cards or a Ouija board (which she doesn't know are occult objects) she finds somewhere. Would she be vulnerable to possible demonic influence, or does her innocence protect her?

I heard of a case where a 9-year-old younger sister became tormented by a demon after her 16-year-old older sister began playing with a Ouija board. The younger sister had no knowledge of her older sister's use of the board.

Or is this something that depends on other factors, such as where she got the objects, and whether the owner of them has any authority/connection to the child?

Dear Alex:

While the culpability of an act may be mitigated for a variety of reasons, the devil does not care about such things. Anyone may be attacked by demons whenever they enter Satan's sandbox, even if they enter that sandbox not knowing the danger.

A real life analogy is that a child innocently walking along a path known to contain quicksand will still die regardless of the fact that the child did not know the danger.

In the case of the 16 year old, she brought the demon into the house. Once in the house the demons will take advantage of whomever they can.

Again, a real-life analogy is a 16 year old who brings drugs into the house. As a result of a drug-deal gone bad, the drug dealers do a drive by shooting of the house. The 9 year old is killed in the cross-fire. Or, the older sister brings into the house drug-addicted boyfriend who rapes the 9 year old.

All of us suffer from the sins and actions of others. This would be a case of the 9 yr old suffering because of the sins of the older sister.

This does not mean that we are left totally exposed without protection, but it is a sad fact that the innocent often suffer from the actions of the guilty.

In such cases the persons suffering from attacks should avail themselves of spiritual warfare prayers to protect themselves. In the case of a child, the parents have the authority over the demons to protect their children.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
