constant fear | cordelia | Tuesday, January 18, 2011 |
Question: Dear brother, i know that Catholics don't believe in the end times the way born again christians do, and i believe the news media is stoking this fear. With all the reports of birds falling from the sky and cows dropping dead. I imagine that there is probably a scientific explanation for it all. yet i am plagued by fear always waiting for something to happen. I was not really like this before 9/11 but now i always am thinking when is the other shoe going to drop. I am fearful for myself and family. I have been trying to live a holier life and be ready for death when it comes, but this fear is robbing me of any peace or joy. Thank you for your help and all that you do. |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r)
Dear Cordelia: Be not afraid! was one of the mottoes of our Blessed Pope John Paul II. We have nothing to fear from the "end times" or from terrorist attacks or from nuclear holocaust, or from anything else. Fear is a product of distrust and lack of faith. We need to understand that God is not a liar and that He keeps his promises. Gods promises us that "all things work together for good to those who love him" (Roman 8:28). He also promises that:
This is the promise of God -- that he will not allow anything to come into your life that would tempt you beyond your strength and give you a way to escape. God does not lie. Thus, when trials and tribulations come our way, we can know absolutely that we can handle it and not fall into the sin of despair and fear, for example, because God says so and He does not lie. Of course, we have to let Him give us this grace. We have to remember that God will generally not give us this grace in advance, but only at the moment it is needed. This is one reason why Jesus told us:
We need to focus on today, not on what may or may not happen tomorrow. The focus is to keep our eyes on the Lord today, to be prepared to meet Him today. We might not have a tomorrow. I could have a heart-attack and die while I am typing this answer. If that happened that will be the end of my world on this planet. I don't have to wait for the "end times" or some terrorist attack. If my heart attacks me I will be dead now. If I walk in front of a speeding bus, my world will end. We absolutely cannot allow fear to make us impotent to living today, for today is all we have. Now with that said, there can be a demonic element that is making it hard to release fear. In that event, spiritual warfare prayer is needed. The Rebuking Particular Spirits found in our prayer catalog linked below is a good one for this. You need to rebuke the spirit of fear. Also the Hedge Prayer of Protection. I also want to prescribe to you some spiritual medicine. I want you to read and mediate upon the following three passages from the Bible on a daily basis: Psalms 23, Matthew 5:1-16, and 6:25-34. Remember God loves you and will give you all the grace you need, if your let Him, to endure anything. God Bless, For information on how to receive help see our Help page. We suggest that before contacting us directly for help you try the Seven Steps to Self-Deliverance. These self-help steps will often resolve the problem. Also our Spiritual Warfare Prayer Catalog contains many prayers that may be helpful. If needed you can ask for a Personal Consultation.
