Question:

Hello,

As a young man I lived a very sinful life. I started becoming a better Catholic later in high school. However, when I started praying and going to mass, I began to have intense anxiety. Over the years, I broke free from this anxiety through prayer and temporary use of medicine. Yet, I began to drift away from the Lord and expose myself to pornography and nihilistic philosophy and began to drink often. My anxiety returned, and I eventually had to go to the mental hospital for three days after having a bad reaction to medication and alcohol. When I got out of the hospital, I was put temporarily on a very heavy medication that severely impaired my ability to function.

I began to return to the Lord again, but this time my anxiety manifested itself in severe obsessions about human waste. The Lord healed me of these obsessions through deliverance prayer and the sacraments. Yet, again, I began to drift away form the lord and began to be consume racist literature with an occult bent.

As I have tried to come back to the Lord again, the thoughts have returned with gusto. I have the option of a taking a very heavy medication to stop them, but I will not be able to perform at my job. These thoughts have gone away before through prayer for a period of several years. Someone to whom I have gone for deliverance prayer has told me that she thinks they are demonic attacks and that I don't need the medication. However, I don't know exactly what to do. Would you please give me some advice on the matter? Thank you.

Dear Robert:

I praise God that you continue to try to be close to Him and wish to be free of any afflictions that prevent that.

Assuming that these symptoms are not psychiatric, or at least not completely psychiatric, deliverance prayers and deliverance counseling are a possible solution. When I say "at least not completely psychiatric" what I mean is that most often, demons do not cause problems as much as they love to hitchhike on problems that already exist. They are opportunists.

Thus, if demons see a psychiatric vulnerability, they are most willing to exploit that for all its worth to make the situation worse than it has to be. Deliverance prayers and counseling will hopefully get rid of these demonic opportunists, but any underlying psychiatric condition will remain and must be treated by a mental health professional.

With that said, on the spiritual side of things, I would recommend that you follow the Seven Steps to Self-Deliverance linked below and also avail yourself of the prayers in our Spiritual Warfare Prayer Catalog, also linked below. There is a prayer to Rebuke Particular Spirits. You can rebuke the spirits of lust, anxiety, perversion, or whatever. Name the demons by their attributes. There is also a prayer concerning Controlling Thoughts.

The first steps in combating this is to live the best Catholic life you can. Attend to Confession regularly, go to Mass each Sunday and every Holy Day of Obligation, go to daily Masses if possible. Receive our Lord in the Sacrament as often as possible when you are properly disposed (in a state of Grace). Go to Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament at least one hour per week. Develop devotions to saints such as St. Dymphna, the patron of those with mental and spiritual afflictions. Pray daily and go all the things that good devout Catholics do.

Remember that unwanted thoughts are not a sin. Rather it is what we do with the thoughts that can be a problem. When these unwanted thoughts come, rebuke them and ask God to give you good thoughts. Use the prayer in the Catalog as well.

If you do not receive any relief from all this, then you may need to contact us for formal deliverance counseling.

Perseverance is the key. This will require much work on your part and a perseverance and patience. God loves you.

We will be in prayer for you.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
