Question: Recently I've been spending a lot of time with a good friend of mine. Both of us have a history of being attacked by dark figures, and both of us are very strong in our faith. We have strong feelings for each other, but he is currently discerning the priesthood, so that makes things difficult. We talk about the faith together a lot and both express how in love we are with the Lord. It is a great friendship and full of faith sharing. I feel this may make the devil, or present spirit, angry. Since we started spending more time together the attacks have been more frequent and stronger. Monday night we were talking on skype and decided to say goodnight. Right after I hung up he called me back due to sadistic type images that kept flashing into his mind out of his control and completely out of no where. We were on skype (video chatting) and I told him to go to sleep (after we prayed together). The computer kept making really creepy noises that I could not adjust the volume too no matter how I tried. It wouldn't stop until the 4 o'clock hour hit. When Edrick fell asleep his bed was shaken really powerfully at around 3:45. Last night we were hanging out at his house on the couch talking about everything between us and he sensed something really strongly with us. I didn't feel it at first and then moments later I felt as though I was being suffocated by the thickness of the presence in the room. Then we both heard something move right in front of us in the corner of the room and both of our bodies started trembling. I stopped breathing out of fear without even realizing it and tears were brought to my eyes. We went up stairs and prayed with his family. The rest of the night (we all slept in his moms room out of absolute terror) Edrick and I could not sleep and kept consistently feeling this entity watching us. Around 4 AM Edrick shot up because he felt something breathing on him. At around 5 I felt something evil and so angry was literally smothering me and I shot up out of fright. Even their cat was freaking out last night and glaring at thin air. It would move it's gaze in rapid movements as if watching something and then it would run away in fright. It kept wailing and crying. It came in the room and was staring at Edrick and I for a good while with eyes full of fear. What could all this be? What do we do?
Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r) Dear Melody: Satan fears devout Christians. He especially fears and hates good orthodox and faithful men who will be priests. If Edrick continues in his discernment to the priesthood he may experience more of this. It is an attempt to scare him away from the priesthood. He must persevere through these harassments. It is also very common for those about to enter religious life or the priesthood to be plagued with sexual temptations. You two need to be very circumspect with your friendship. Do not underestimate the power of the devil to stir improper emotions. This is a critical issue. In religious life, nuns are taught (as least traditionally) not to talk to strange men. One time in a grocery store I passed by two nuns in full habit. I, too, was in full habit. I said, "Hi, sisters." They did not respond. The nuns were not being discourteous, they were being obedient. There is a story told of an old priest, some 94 years old, sleeping in his bed. The housekeeper, a woman, came into his room and thought him dead. She bent over the priest and placed her cheek next to the priest's mouth to see if he was breathing. At that moment the priest woke up and saw her there and screamed, "Get thee hence woman, the fire still burns." He died five minutes later. The moral of this story is this priest, even at 94 years of age and on his death bed, understood the absolute necessity of being circumspect, keeping distance, from the opposite sex. You and Edrick must take the same circumspection especially since the devil is already heavily active in his attacks and harassments. Avoid even the hint of any circumstance where improper emotions may erupt. Never be alone together -- ever. No matter how innocent your relationship, never underestimate the power of the devil to try to pervert it. Be on guard. The way for both of you to handle this is to live the good Catholic life of the Sacraments and devotions, and avail yourselves to the Spiritual Warfare prayers as needed.
