Can a person be a witch and be catholic/christian? Clara Friday, October 8, 2010

Question:

Can a person claim to be a "good" witch even if she speaks of God nicely and prays the Our Father? Should I steer clear of such a person? Would God be mad at me for staying friends with such person? Am I in any danger? Do I need to protect myself from her or other witches? And HOW?
Thank You Very Much.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r)

Dear Clara:

There is no such thing as a "Christian" witch. Witchcraft, even the so-called "white witches" are an abomination to God, a violation of the First Commandment, and a moral evil.

All witchcraft, including white witchcraft, appeals to the powers of Satan even if the witch does not know that or does not believe that. There can only be two sources: 1) God; or 2) Satan. As God says witchcraft is condemn then the source of witchcraft has to be Satan.

A witch can dress up their sin by all sort of religious language, prayers, and paraphernalia. The devil does that all the time. It means nothing. No Christian can spit in the face of God and say they are good Christians.

Any Christian practicing any form of witchcraft is in grave sin and thus barred from the Sacraments.

(Deuteronomy 18:10-12)  There shall not be found among you any one who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, any one who practices divination, a soothsayer, or an augur, or a sorcerer (another word for witch), or a charmer, or a medium, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD; and because of these abominable practices the LORD your God is driving them out before you.

The Catechism states:

Divination and magic

2115 God can reveal the future to his prophets or to other saints. Still, a sound Christian attitude consists in putting oneself confidently into the hands of Providence for whatever concerns the future, and giving up all unhealthy curiosity about it. Improvidence, however, can constitute a lack of responsibility.

2116 All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to "unveil" the future. Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone.

2117 All practices of magic or sorcery [My Note: otherwise known as witchcraft], by which one attempts to tame occult powers, so as to place them at one's service and have a supernatural power over others - even if this were for the sake of restoring their health - are gravely contrary to the virtue of religion. These practices are even more to be condemned when accompanied by the intention of harming someone, or when they have recourse to the intervention of demons. Wearing charms is also reprehensible. Spiritism often implies divination or magical practices; the Church for her part warns the faithful against it. Recourse to so-called traditional cures does not justify either the invocation of evil powers or the exploitation of another's credulity.

It is not wise to hang around such a person as you describe. In fact, St. Paul says we are to shun those who claim to be of the Faith and yet live sinful lifestyles. The Bible is very clear on what our response should be:

(1 Corinthians 5:11)  But rather I wrote to you not to associate with any one who bears the name of brother (that is, if he claims to be a Christian) if he is guilty of immorality or greed, or is an idolater, (note: witchcraft is a form of idolatry) reviler, drunkard, or robber--not even to eat with such a one.

(2 Thessalonians 3:6)  Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother (that is, a person who claims to be Christian) who is living in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us.

(2 John 1:9-11)  Any one who goes ahead and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God; he who abides in the doctrine has both the Father and the Son. If any one (that is, anyone, Christian or not) comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive him into the house or give him any greeting; for he who greets him shares his wicked work.

Now this is not suggesting that we be rude and cruel. It is teaching us that we are to guard our faith from those who could harm it. Friendships and associations with people like witches is taking a risk.

In the name manner as we would not like our children hanging around the wrong crowd, or any person of bad influence, we adults must not presume we handle it either. We need to be very circumspect about who we allow into our lives.

In terms of protecting yourself against witches should you anger or irritate some witch, or for whatever reasons you suspect a witch has cursed you, the Hedge Prayer of Protection and the Breaking Curses and Spells found in our Spiritual Warfare Prayer Catalog linked below are useful.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
