Question Title Posted By Question Date
Demonic opression Peter Wednesday, October 6, 2010

Question:

Brother this is not a question but some helpful advice for people being opressed or harassed by deamons. I find that once I've worked out that I'm being attacked in some way (it sometimes takes a day or two to figure it out) I accept the attack and offer it to God for the salvation of sinners and the holy souls. The attack usually stops immediately. If it doesn't stop than it may not be a spiritual problem.

My latest attack was four days ago before confession. I nearly put off going until I realised what was happening and offered it up and stopped it.

Hope this helps.
Peter o's.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r)

Dear Peter:

To offer up the suffering from an attack is an excellent thing to do. This method may generally work to stop mild and rather trivial demonic attacks, but the meanest attacks are not likely to be thwarted by this method (though we should still make the offer).  As such, it is dangerous to say that if the attack does not go away that it may not a spiritual problem.

We must remember that to offer up our suffering to God is not a magic formula. There are no guarantees.  Many demons confronted with their efforts being thwarted in this way may go away. Other demons may not go away and may even make a project out of us. In this case we can be in for some real harassment and serious attack. Demonic Oppression is a very serious level of demonization that is not likely to respond by merely offering up suffering. In fact, I can't think of a single case in which the person was freed from oppression by merely offering up the suffering. While this should be done, much more is needed in levels of obsession, oppression, and other serious levels of demonization.

As St. James says, "Resist the devil and he will flee from you" (James 4:7).  There are times when one must do a lot more than an "offering up", we must specifically resist with the weapons of spiritual warfare, which are the Sacraments, Sacramentals, and prayer.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
