The importance of Obedience Elizabeth Monday, September 13, 2010

Question:

Dear Brother Ignatius Mary,

First of all blessings to you! In reference to my posting on July 9, 2010, again we took your advice to heart and followed it. Right after we said no without a doubt my husbands brother started sending us e-mails titled "HEALTH NEWS", and said he had terrible news that his wife had breast cancer. Then another one saying the doctors performed surgery 5 weeks later and the results were in fact Cancer.

During this period of 5-6 weeks my husband and I felt terrible but we also did not contact them back because when we prayed we did not feel peace. Four days after the news of the results we received an e-mail stating they had excellent news and that his wife had no cancer and that it was just calcification.

Thank you for your prayers for us because we were able to discern the spirit and act with caution. God revealed the truth to us because of our faithful friends like you. I hope you know your missionary keeps many of us out of trouble! Is it possible that God can speak to us through news articles? Because the very next day of hearing she didn't have Cancer at all there was an article on Cancer hoaxes. Maybe just a strange coincidence.

I also wanted to share the importance of Obedience. I had a priest who worked with my husband and I on delivering us. In his instruction to me he told me to stay away from a particular Church and to stay away from a woman I had met there. What was interesting is this priest would not tell me why he just asked me to be docile to his instruction. So I have been obedient and followed his guidance. Well, I met another woman recently who invited me to a bible study at this particular Church. It's been about a year since this priest gave me this instruction and I did not want to be disobedient. Because he is so busy it's not easy to get in touch with him so I kept praying for Our Lord to help me. In fact, I was praying the Divine Mercy and this woman called asking me to come to their bible study. I explained that through prayer and being obedient to my spiritual adviser I could not attend. Being honest sometimes is difficult but she respected me being obedient.

In our conversation this particular woman that the priest wanted me to stay away from was brought up by the woman inviting me to the bible study. She said, that there were rumors that this woman was into Santeria and asked if I knew her. Almost as if she knew why I wasn't coming and also Glory to God for the priest who gave me warnings over a year ago. This priest would not give me details but was obviously being told something to protect me. You know this has been a big lesson for me on obedience and how important it is. Look how sweet Our Lord is in revealing to me a danger ahead, knowing I have been mincemeat in the past.

Brother Ignatius please continue to pray for us as we continue to pray for you. Pray for our perseverance!

God bless,
Elizabeth

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r)

Dear Elizabeth:

We certainly will continue our prayer for you and your family.

Your story does illustrate how important obedience can be. This priest may not have known any details about this woman. It is possible that the Holy Spirit merely impressed on him to caution you. That is how it works sometimes.

I remember early in the organization of our Association we were discussing details and were to voting on provisions of our rule, the Rule of St. Michael. We were all sitting out on the porch deck on a beautiful afternoon. When the time for the meeting came I felt that we needed to go into the house for the meeting. I really did not know why, it was just something that I felt needed to be done. The rest of the people obeyed since I was the Superior even though they did not understand why I insisted upon it.

During the course of discussions on our Rule, there were some disagreements and things got little heated. It was then that we all realized the wisdom of coming into the house for the meeting. If we had been on the porch deck the neighbors would have heard the argument. That would not have been a good witness.

No one else felt this need to go into the house, only me. Since I was the Superior God gave me the impression, and then, in my capacity as Superior, I related that impression to my people.

In similar manner as your story, obedience to the superior turned out to be the prudent and wise choice for our meeting.

"The more we see failure in obedience, the stronger should be our suspicion of temptation." -- St. Teresa of Avila

"Lord, those are your best servants who wish to shape their life on Your answers rather than to shape your answers on their wishes." --St. Augustine

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
