Question:

I used a rosary (probably blessed) as a pendulum. A member of Catholic clergy taught me and was told was talking to my guardian angel and that it was ok to do this accr. to Church. I asked private questions. Am I in danger of that personal info haunting me in the future? Would God allow that to happen since a clergy taught me, a religious object was used, and I was at the most depressed time in my life? will I be held accountable since i was mislead by one of the Church's own?

What should I do in my house where rosary was used? I plan to do house blessing myself. should I do anything else? I had St. benedict medals and salt blessed by priest. He looked through blessing and thought the hiding of medals was superstitious. He said medals are to be worn, not hidden on purpose. He suggested using blessed palms, since they are of organic matter. Would palms be okay to use in each room instead of medals? But, I guess I can bury the medals in the yard, because I think burying religious articles is considered proper, right? Burying them around the house would protect the house interior too, right?

Please answer all my questions.

Question Answered by

Dear Jon:

I am a little confused myself. Did the priest say you can talk to your Guardian Angel? Or did he say you can use the rosary as a pendulum to talk and ask questions of your Guardian Angel?

One can certainly pray (talk) to his Guardian Angel in the same way one would pray and talk to our Blessed Mother or any Saint in heaven. One may not use a pendulum to ask questions of one's Guardian Angel, or any Saint, or any spirit as that is divination which is a grave sin. The Catechism states:

Divination and magic

2115 God can reveal the future to his prophets or to other saints. Still, a sound Christian attitude consists in putting oneself confidently into the hands of Providence for whatever concerns the future, and giving up all unhealthy curiosity about it. Improvidence, however, can constitute a lack of responsibility.

2117 All practices of magic or sorcery, by which one attempts to tame occult powers, so as to place them at one's service and have a supernatural power over others - even if this were for the sake of restoring their health - are gravely contrary to the virtue of religion. These practices are even more to be condemned when accompanied by the intention of harming someone, or when they have recourse to the intervention of demons. Wearing charms is also reprehensible. Spiritism often implies divination or magical practices; the Church for her part warns the faithful against it. Recourse to so-called traditional cures does not justify either the invocation of evil powers or the exploitation of another's credulity.

2116 All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to "unveil" the future. (Cf. Deut 18:10; Jer 29:8) Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone.

If this is what you did -- use a rosary as a pendulum in order ask questions of your Guardian Angel about your life or future -- then you need to confess that as it is grave sin. It is the sin of the occult (seeking hidden information) and a violation of the First Commandment.

If a priest said you could use a rosary, or anything else, as a pendulum to solicit your Guardian Angel to answer questions, then that priest gravely sinned.

You need to confess this activity and then prayer this Prayer of Renunciation

Dear Heavenly Father. You have said in Your Word to have no other gods before You (Deut 5:7) and that the ways of the occult are an abomination and those who practice it are an abomination before You. Indeed Lord, You have not called many sins an "abomination", but this one, of occult and witchcraft and idolatry are indeed a special offense to You. Lord I confess that I have been an abomination to You by my involvement in things occultic by improperly trying to gain answers to my questions from my Guardian Angel. I am so sorry for offending You. I thank you Lord for Your forgiveness of my abominable sin. I pray that by the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ that all ground gained by evil spirits because of my abominable sin be canceled and taken back and that all bonds and bondages the devil has placed upon me be broken forever (Gal 5:1). I pray that You will shed light on all my ways that I may know the full extent of my abomination. I claim my body and mind for the Lord Jesus Christ, and in His Name, and with His authority, declare freedom from my sins of occult involvement, and to all attachments, bondages, and involvements with the enemies of the Lord Jesus Christ. By faith and by the Sacraments of the Church I have received You into my life and am now seated with Christ in the heavenlies (Eph. 2:6). I now choose to adopt a worshipful spirit and a faithful heart to the One True God. Amen.

First, go to confession, then pray the prayer above, then pray the following general Prayer of Renunciation Of Satan and Claiming the Full Victory:

I claim the full victory that my Lord Jesus Christ won on the Cross for me. Having disarmed the powers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross” (Col. 2:15). His victory for my is my victory.

In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ I renounce all the workings of Satan in my life in all its forms, whether brought into my life by my actions or by others. I break all attachments, ground, curses, spells, and rights Satan may have in my life whether such ground was gained through my actions or through others. Strengthened by the intercession of the Immaculate Virgin Mary, Mother of God, of Blessed Michael the Archangel, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and all the Saints and Angels of Heaven, and powerful in the holy authority of the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I ask you Lord to command Satan and all his minions, whomever they may be, to get out of my life and stay out. With that authority I now take back the ground in my life gained by Satan through my sins. I reclaim this ground and my life for Christ. I now dedicate myself to the Lord Jesus Christ; I belong to Him alone. Amen.

Holy Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Concerning the House Blessing: Your priest is wrong about using the medals as some sort of superstition. If the medals are superstitious then the Holy Water and the Holy Salt are superstition too. The Church gives us these sacramentals to use for purposes like this.

Now, any sacramental can be used superstitiously. Medals, Scapulars, Holy Water, anything can be used in a superstitious way. We are not using the medals in superstitious way. The medals are blessed objects that we put in each room. This is no different than placing a blessed Crucifix in each room. I have a blessed rosary hanging on the door knob of each door in the house. I also have blessed pictures on the wall, including a picture of Pope Benedict blessed by Pope Benedict and a picture of Pope John Paul II blessed by Pope John Paul II. These things are not superstitious unless I use them in a superstitious way.

Sacramentals are not talismans. There is no power in a sacramental itself. The power is in the faith of the person who uses the sacramental. The sacramental is a symbol of our faith.

In addition, as with any blessed object, demons generally do not like to be around anything that has been blessed whether that be a medal, a scapular, a picture, a rosary, Holy Water, or Holy Salt. These blessed objects do not guarantee that demons will stay away, but the Church says that the are useful for our protection. The St. Benedict medal the most indulgenced by the Church than any other medal and the Church says it is efficacious for protection against the Enemy.

These St. Benedict Medals do not have to be "hidden". No where does it say in our Ritual that the medals must be "hidden". The medals can be placed openly in each room for all to see. The actual instructions are: "Then place the blessed medal of St. Benedict in a location where, if possible, the medal may remain undisturbed. It is okay to place the medal inside a wall, on top of a window pane or some other place that it will not be disturbed." The point is to place the medals somewhere in the room where they will remain undisturbed. If that is a place that is hidden, no problem. If that is a place for all to see, no problem.

You can use blessed Palm Branches if you wish. That is not a problem. Since the Ritual already uses Holy Water and Holy Salt (both of organic matter), we use the St. Benedict Medal because of the Church's affirmation of its effective use in protecting ourselves against evil. There is nothing inherently superstitious about this anymore than using the Holy Water and Holy Salt.

As for the medal meant to be worn, it certainly can be and usually is, but no where does it say it must be worn. People place the blessed medals in many places. One can put the medal anywhere they want -- under their pillow, under their children's pillow, on the wall, in their pocket, around their neck, in their billfold, in the ground in their yard, or glue it to their nose Wink. There are no regulations from the Church on where to place any medal.

Since this House Cleansing and Blessing Ritual is not a liturgical ritual, you can change it as you please. There are no regulations from the Church on it. Thus, if you wish to replace the St. Benedict Medals with blessed Palm Branches, or scapulars, or crucifixes, or any other blessed object, you may.

The Primary thing you need to do is to confess the sin. Then pray the Renunciation Prayers I posted.

The House Cleansing and Blessing may or may not be done. Unless you have having paranormal things take place in your home, or other demonic harassments, the House Cleansing and Blessing is not absolutely needed, but can be done anyway if you wish as a general precaution. It is good for everyone to do.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
