Mental illness or spiritual warfare Jose Sunday, June 27, 2010

Question:

Hi I have really become a devoted catholic for the last three years attending mass almost on a daily base, and serving as a Eucharistic minister. I even had a praying ministry of praying for the sick at the local hospital. In my ministry there was healing and even spiritual deliverance. But I had to give up my ministry for the time being, because I believe I was Suffering along with the patients to the point of being terminally ill. Even do I was Successful at delivering people from spiritual possession such as hearing voices and suicidal tendencies, I myself became victim of demonic beating and end even possession.

I have recover and no longer terminally ill, thanks to God a second life. But I still become posees from time to time and harass by spiritual forces. Lucky I have a friend that does me exorcism at will the only problem is that he is not catholic. I must say I am disillusion at the catholic church for not believing , knowing or be willing to do spiritual warfare.

I failed to get a spiritual director and have been battling the forces of evil all my life without help from the catholic church. During different phases of my life I have been able to see the spirits of the dead. My coworkers at one time verified that the people I had been talking to actually worked with them but had passed away. But this is not my problem.

At the age of twenty three I received the invisible stigmata since then the demonic assaults have intensify from nightly beat ins to straight out possession. I have also had the pleasure of having visions of the blessed trinity, our Lord Jesus on the actual cross. And recently I finally started to get visited by angels.

I was at the age of thirty two refer to a psychiatrist who put me on medication. All the doctors since then have told me their is no demons spirits or angels this is just the creation of a delusional mind. Even the church told me to see a Jewish psychiatrist. I am so so disillusion with the catholic church because there are so many people like who are being oppressed by demonic forces and are not mentally ill.

I plan to return to my praying ministry for the sick as soon as I figure out how to keep from becoming sick and stop the spiritual harassment. I made this far because St Padre Pio is one of my saints and I know what a suffering soul is. I had had locution since a child and many spiritual revelations which I find very disturbing. When the demons posses me I feel their hate for God and it makes it impossible to pray. I know their possessing me because When I go see my friend the exorcist what ever evil feelings towards God are instantly gone.

I would like to become a St Michael prayer warrior but i do not know if I qualify. Regardless I will still be praying for the sick and praying prayers of deliverance as needed. Can you please shed some light in this matter, I really need spiritual guidance so that I can continue on my God given mission. As to my sanity I was actualyy asked to become a priest.

Question Answered by

Dear Jose:

Forgive the delay in answering.

I am sorry you are having these disturbances. I am afraid I cannot support you in your quest. What you describe does not appear to be coming from God. "Suffering along with the patients [you are praying for] to the point of being terminally ill" even to the point of your own "possession" is not how it works. These are signs of either a psychiatric issue or a demonization issue, or both. One may be harassed, even beaten up physically, by demons, when he does God's work, but possession is not likely (at least as a result of ministry). If possession is taking place, there is another cause for it. In addition, if one is called by God to pray for the sick, becoming sick oneself is not the result. Getting sick along with the patients is a sign of either the psychiatric or the demonic, but such is not how Godly calling works.

But, frankly, Jose, you are not qualified to diagnose your own possession or that of others. What is likely here is that you are using the wrong word. One can be demonized without being possessed. Again, you are not qualified to know the difference.

Given your spiritual and mental vulnerability you should stop this prayer ministry at the hospital. Stay at home and pray for the sick. One does not have to be in the presence of the sick person to pray for them, or even to heal them. Jesus healed long distance (Matthew 8:5-13). This is what I say if I were your spiritual director.

You should not try to perform deliverance on anyone. Again, you are not qualified.

As for your "gifts" that you say you have, God does not force these "gifts" upon people. When such gifts come from God, they are are a source of great grace to the person who has them, and to others. You seem to have fear about the praying ministry wanting to avoid demonic harassment if you return to the ministry. This is proof that you not qualified to perform this type of ministry.

Some of what you describe suggests something other that which comes from God. Seeing dead people is not a gift from God in-and-of-itself. If God permits the spirit of a dead person to appear to you, it will be for a specific reason, and not arbitrary. You need to renounce this experience.

While demonic harassment, even severe harassment like that Padre Pio experienced, is a likely result of genuine stigmata, "straight out posession" is not. A stigmatist is not possessed.

Bottomline, Jose, I am sorry, but everything you have said here suggest that all these experiences are either psychiatric or demonic. I see little evidence of anything godly (except in the visions of the Blessed Trinity).

If you really did have visions of the Blessed Trinity, then that is certainly a blessing.

What I suggest is that you focus on developing and growing your spirituality. Continue with daily Mass when you can, assist at your parish church as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion (you are not a Eucharist Minister. That term is for the priest.), and pray at home rather than go to the hospital. You do not need to know the names or the ailments of the patients to pray for them. God knows.

We will be praying for you.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
