dead will again... | Mario | Friday, June 25, 2010 |
Question: Dear bro. Ignatius! First, sorry about my english, it's been a while since I've written a letter in english… Anyway, I asked my brother for help, thus I hope, my question will be clearer… How would you help a person who says that he/she has a dead will, by this I mean that he feels very static, doesn't have a motivation to do anything, he is a bit desperate, and very indifferent about everything. He doesn't live in a mortal sin, but he doesn't have a will to fight his bad habits. He humiliates and blames himself for his lacking prayer-desire. He goes to Mass every day and receives the Holy Communion, but he dosen't experience any change, any movement in himslef. He says that he participates Mass as a “dead man“ . I am trying to conosole him, but I would like to ask you if you could recommend me some special prayer, devotion etc…. What do you think? |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Mario: Thanks to your brother for helping to clarify. There is no such thing as a "dead will". One can have their will impaired by addiction, mental illness, brain damage, etc., but one's will does not die. What you describe of your friend is not a dead will, it is perhaps serious clinical depression. He needs to see a psychiatrist as soon as possible. In case there is any spiritual aspect to influence his depression, I recommend that he follow the Seven Steps to Self-Deliverance linked below. But, he may not even be able to do that until he is on medication to help alleviate the depression, or at least to diminish it sufficiently for him to begin to help himself. We will certainly be in prayer for him. God Bless,
