Question: Dear Brother, |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Mary: The devil can use anything, pervert anything, to try to spoil and to delude our thinking away from God. It sounds like this "church" your co-worker has joined is indoctrinating him thoroughly with anti-Catholic dribble. It sounds like his hatred and bigotry is well developed. In that case, there is little you can do directly. I would not engage him in debate or conversation about Catholicism. Do not under any circumstances "egg him on." Your snide remark, as you found out, only made things worse. As best you can stay away from him and avoid conversations with him. But, if he will not stop insulting your faith to your face, then ask him to stop and to be a Christian to respect your wishes. If he refuses to respect your request, if he is a co-worker, then I would file a complaint with the employer concerning his harassment of you as this is harassment. Pray for him. By the way, the word "Pope" is derived from the Greek word pappas, and the Latin papa (papa is also the word in Italian and Spanish). If your friend had any actually biblical knowledge he would know that. Specifically the word "Pope" is an English transliteration of the Latin (and Italian), Papa, meaning "father". Anytime the English word "father" is read in the Bible, that is the word, papa (Pope), whether he like is or not. Also the Bible does mention the "father" of the nation (church), the Pope, in Isaiah 22:21-22:
These passages were the ones quoted by Jesus when, speaking in Aramaic, he changed Simon's name to Aramaic name "Kepha", meaning "rock" (Petros, in Greek; Peter in English) and made him the first Pope of the Church, saying that "you are Kepha and upon this Kepha I shall build my Church", giving him the "keys of the kingdom" (verse 22:22). The disciples, knew what Kepha meant and what Jesus was doing in changing Simon's name to "rock". They also knew the Scriptures and thus knew exactly what Jesus was doing in Matthew 16:19 - "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." Jesus did not quote Scripture flippantly. It was this passage that converted me from a Baptist preacher to a Catholic. This is as clear as a bright sunny day unless one is wearing blinders (which the Protestant do). This passage clearly refers to the prime minister of the Kingdom, which is what the Isaiah passage is about -- the "father" (papa, Pope) of the kingdom. The Pope of the Catholic Church is the Prime Minister of the King. Every King has a Prime Minister. King Jesus has his Prime Minister, the Pope. The Bible says so and that settles it. No arguments otherwise are valid. Or, as we used to say, "That's the fact, jack." Anyone who denies this is intellectually dishonest, Biblically ignorant, and misinformed. Anyone, like your co-worker, who vehemently denies the Scriptural teaching here is a raving lune and bigot. Let him stew in his own prideful juices and have nothing more to do with him.
But, always pray for him. God Bless,
