About souls who are tormented by others Elizabeth Tuesday, April 13, 2010

Question:

Dear Brother Ignatius,

First I want to say I am sorry to hear you are not feeling well. It certainly is a struggle when we're not feeling well. I will keep you in my daily prayers.

Thank you for your response about Phoebe. My heart went out to her soul for the anguish she had to be in. I have been tormented on and off in my life and the dear Lord has saved me several times.

My question is I still get tormented by others, even people who run retreats that I have never met, is there something that Our Lord is trying to teach me?

I have always had a very sensitive heart and would not think of hurting someone on purpose. This last retreat I went to this woman was constantly trying to cause problems for me, even to stop my special diet needs from the chef, and to many things to mention. Thanks be to God I have become stronger in the last couple of years, so I stood up for myself in the best way I could. But this takes so much energy, prayer, and it was a distraction at a beautiful Holy week retreat.

I do think the biggest lesson Our Lord is teaching me is to be very discerning and that just because they are at a Catholic retreat does not mean they are not hiding behind the "mask of virtue". Before the retreat I had read about praying to God for His protection against Malice hidden behind the "mask of virtue", in Louis de Montfort's book, Gabriel Amorth, and the Divine Mercy booklet ( a prayer by Sr. Faustina). Looking back I feel Our Lord was preparing me and letting me know that this is always something to look out for.

Do you think when we do spiritual reading that Our Lord can speak to us especially when it's the same thing in different books? I am pretty positive that maybe I was just ready to hear the message. Thanks to you and others who have prayed for me, including all the angels and saints in Heaven.

Please continue to pray for me as I will continue to pray for you. I hope that Our loving Lord and Our Blessed Mother Mary embrace you and keep you safe in their loving care. You are a "Soldier of Christ", thank you!

God Bless you,
Elizabeth

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Elizabeth:

Thank you for your prayers. My health has deteriorated over the past months, but I am on new medication that hopefully will make things better -- we'll see.

The hassles we get from others is an opportunity to learn mortification. I am trying to learn that myself with problematic family members. It is an opportunity to mortify pride and that stems from pride, such as frustration, anger, etc.

These hassles can sometimes be inspired by the Enemy, but not necessarily. We all have a capacity to be "pills" naturally stemming from our concupiscence. The Enemy, however, does like to "hitchhike" on problems that already exist. Thus, he does not have to create problems, just look for problems that are already ongoing.

As for spiritual reading, the first thing that God is saying to you is whatever the message is intended for the passage you are reading. Secondarily, reading a passage can inspire us to insight naturally, and thirdly, God can use the reading to speak to you specifically. We need to always be open for all three results and always be listening for the "still small voice" of our master.

We continue to pray for you.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
