Question: Dear Br. Ignatius Mary, Is it possible that one can sense an attack by the devil? What I mean is, can one spiritually sense his attempt to exert a power over one's soul? I experienced something like this. In a way, it felt like a struggle, but the "feeling" was not sensible. I'm sorry but its hard to articulate these things. Thanks and God bless you, Mary

Ignatius Mary, OLSM Dear Mary: Yes, it is not only possible to sense an attempt of the devil to attack, but is likely with any baptized person who is living a good Christian life. The Holy Spirit within you can and does prompt you with such discernment of spiritual danger. Your Guardian Angel also has the task of warning you of danger. The devil, however, cannot exert power over your soul, but he can exert power over your imagination and sift it like wheat, inspire thoughts, influence emotions, and in cases of higher levels of demonization, and of course, possession, the devil can exert power over the body. What you describe as a non-sensible feeling and a struggle is common and an example of how an attempt of an attack, or an attack, from the Enemy may happen. What I mean is, can one spiritually sense his attempt to exert a power over one's soul?
