Question:

Hello,

Are you familiar with the Jesus Heals Ministry in St. Paul MN?

http://www.askmotherrose.org/ministries/je-heal.htm

They have been recommended to me by a good, faithful Catholic friend who has benefited from their ministry for years. My friend recommended I pray to discern about this and offered the caution that it is important not to let just anyone lay hands on you. They also speak in tongues and work in teams of 2 (from my understanding).

Jesus Heals Ministry seem authentic and solidly Catholic. But wanting to "test the spirits" I thought to ask if you have any knowledge of this group. They have been recommended to me for healing of the family tree and strength to go through some upcoming trials (Custody of children) .

Thank you in advance!

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Elizabeth:

Well, the website you listed gives virtually no information at all about the group. Thus, it is nearly impossible to assess what they do.

I do have a red flag in that they are obviously a Charismatic group with what is probably the typical misinterpretation coming from Protestant Pentecostals of "word of knowledge" and "word of wisdom".

In addition, the laying on hands can be a problem depending on how they do it. Many Charismatics lay on hands in a way that too closely resembles that which only a priest may do.

This group needs to be closely examined. Because a Bishop said a Mass for them is meaningless. That does not imply formal recognition or approbation.

I would recommend reading the essay Charism Gifts Building Up the Church (pdf file) and using that as a guide in evaluating this group. This essay gives the pros and cons of the Charismatic Renewal, statements from priests, bishops, and popes, and explains the "Pentecostalisms" that often contaminate the Catholic Renewal.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
