Question Title Posted By Question Date
Non-verbal autistic child with great fears at night MariaE Tuesday, February 16, 2010

Question:

Brother Ignatius,
I have 2 autistic children, my beautiful 3 year old daughter is non-verbal, but chants all day and specially at night words that I do not understand.

She is unreachable most of the time and in her own world, but at night a great fear comes over her and she chants, cries and even screams for up to 2 or 3 hours.

She also has what I thought is a sleep disorder and is awake 3 to 4 hours at night. I had been approaching this with behavioral therapy and failing, but recently (and honestly out of desperation because I was exhausted) I started praying Hail Mary's non-stop one after the other louder than her chanting and she became quiet and calm and eventually fell asleep.

I was both happy that Our Blessed Mother helped her, and scared because I did not expect to see such a change so clearly, and started fearing the evil one might be trying to reach her?

I have an autistic son that does not have these issues, so I'm starting to think it might not be the autism.

Since she cannot talk, I don't know if I should be doing something else other than praying over her. I also have a small baby and don't know if I should pray anything specific to protect him as well.

Thank you so much dear Brother in Christ, any suggestions you have are very welcomed.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Maria:

I am sorry to hear about these troubles. I would recommend several things:

1) bless your children with Holy Water each night as they go to bed and pray with them.

2) on behalf of your children pray the Bedtime Prayer of Protection found in our Prayer Catalog linked below.

3) say a decade of the rosary for them each night immediately after thjey go to bed.

4) buy the CD called Sleep Sound in Jesus by Michael Card. This CD seems to be anointed and has been very successful in keeping the Enemy away. It is a series of lullabies, but is useful for adults too. Play the CD all night on very low volume so as not to disturb your children's sleep.

Try these things and see if there is any improvement. We will be praying for you and your children, especially your daughter.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
