Question: I gave my heart to Christ as a child. Later wound up deep in paganism. Recently, I've returned to Christ and feel strongly he is directing me toward ministry. When I made this decision, I burned all of my pagan things (or so I thought) since that night, in my house we've experienced growling sounds, horrific scratching sounds, objects coming off the wall and being knocked around with no explanation. It got bad enough that my fiancee' refuses to come back there. We've both woke up with unexplained bruises, and the dogs have been going nuts growling at things we don't see, sometimes fleeing from them. On one occassion I heard heavy breathing in my ear, the evil was apparent, but Christ spoke to my heart. I stood up praying aloud, ending with "as for me and my house, we WILL serve the LORD!" When I prayed out loud, the noises moved to the next room, so I prayed there, continued through the whole house that way. It ceased, I thought it was over. Moments later, "it" smacked the wall beside me hard enough that I thought a stud had broken. Few things happened afterward, but I could still feel it there. I found the book of shadows I had used while I was lost, in the bottom of a box filled with kitchen ware. I hadn't put it there. So I burned it around 3:30pm, praying to claim back the ground stolen by darkness all the while. As the last of it burned, I saw a figure, in a white hooded cloak about 10' behind me walking away from the house toward the woods. Since then it has followed me, making it hard to breathe when I speak of God or pray aloud. When I close my eyes to pray, I see a light above the horizon line, and a darkness below gnawing at me. I deciphered my biggest hook from that, hatred of one who has hurt my mother. I prayed for grace to forgive him, and to grow stronger in the Lord. It's still not completely gone, but I feel that if I hold true to God he'll lift this curse. Christ has shown his power, now I'm ridding myself of the "hooks" through prayer and pennance. Since you have done something that pleases God, but displeases the devil, the experiences you are having are not unusual. Many times the devil will harass people who come out of paganism, occultism, and the like as a sort of revenge for betraying him, and to try to scare you away from God. I would advise that you follow the Seven Steps to Self-Deliverance linked below, as well as use the Spiritual Warfare Prayer Catalog. To counter this you have to begin living the best Christian life you can, seek out and renounce all "hooks" in your life that the demons can use as an excuse to hang on to your life, spend a lot of time in prayer and Bible readings, attending Church weekly, etc. I may be reading into your words, but there seems to be a subtle hint that you and your fiancée may be sleeping together. If that is the case, that must stop immediately until after you are married. The devil loves sexual sin as it is one of the biggest hooks that allows him to harass people. Only when you have cleansed yourself by renouncing all hooks and promising a righteous life (we all fall into sin, of course, but that is what confession is for), can you consider ministry.
