Question: What would topics be that cannot be openly discussed. I understand that people have things to hide, but when it comes to religion, everything should be discussed openly! Jesus discussed everything openly. |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Johan: The Catholic Church is not a secret society, and does not hold secret knowledge like the ancient esoteric mystery cults of old. Everything about the faith and teaching is open. There are no taboo topics. There are things, however, that are kept confidential. The Sacrament of Confession is absolutely confidential. In fact, any priest who breaks the seal of Confession is automatically excommunicated. The reason for this is that one's sins are between the person and God and is no one else's business. Information like personnel files, medical files, psychiatric files, disciplinary records, and other personal records are confidential in all organizations and ought to be. But, in terms of Faith, doctrine, theology, and such there is no topic that cannot be openly discussed, except perhaps topics that are not appropriate to discuss in front of certain people, such as sexual matters of theology in front of children.
