Question:

Hello :)

I have a question. The following claim is made by a large Kabbalah group. Sicne Kabbalah teaches doctrines like reincarnation and astrology, can you say, in terms of Catholic theology and since we believe Revealed religion comes to us from Jesus, that the alleged dream below could have been either a)a lie or b)not of God? Thank you for your time.

"The year was 1971. [The woman] called the Kabbalist and pleaded with him to teach her this mystical wisdom.

For milennia, there had been a veil of secrecy over the knowledge of Kabbalah [because it was forbidden to be taught to women].

That night, [the Rabbi] asked his [deceased] teacher to appear in a dream, as a sign of permission to teach [her]. Nothing happens.

The next day, [the Rabbi] met with [her] to refuse her request.

She told the [Rabbi] about a strange dream she had the previous night. A religious-looking man had come to her. He walked with a cane and wore a dark suit. She described the gentleman in detail. She said the old man took his cane and placed it upon her forehead, offering her a blessing.

[The Rabbi] was taken aback, startled. The man described so exactingly was [his teacher], who, indeed, walked with a cane for over 20 years."

Question Answered by Mr. Joe Meineke

Dear Michael,

Yes, with absolute certainty, the dream is either fabricated or not of God.

We know that everything God wanted to reveal to us has already been publicly revealed through Christ and his Church and that anything contrary to those revealed truths is certainly not of God.  Since Kabbala is not part of public revelation, but is is a discipline and school of thought concerned with the mystical aspect of Judaism (likend to the so-called Chrisian theosophy movement), any such "dream" is nonsense.

For a more complete reference on Kabbala, I recommend visiting the Catholic Encyclopedia article on the subject.

God bless you,
Joe Meineke
