Question Title Posted By Question Date
Vestment Color for Pentecost Afternoon Deacon Candidate Monday, July 26, 2004

Question:

I will (with God's grace) be ordained to the Permanent Diaconate next year, the day before Pentecost. My first Mass as a deacon will be Pentecost afternoon at a special parish celebration. The question of vestment color has come up. Obviously the Masses for Pentecost require red. Would a Mass "on Pentecost" but not "of Pentecost" - such as 2:00 in the afternoon, long after the regular parish Masses - still require red? Or would gold "jubilee" vestments (which are already on hand) be accceptable? Thank you.

Question Answered by Mr. Jacob Slavek

Dear Deacon Candidate,

The GIRM allows that on solemn occasions more precious vestments that are not of the color of the day may be allowed, even if not of the color of the day.  I would think that your first Mass as a deacon would qualify.  Make sure that you still say the Mass for Pentecost, though.

Mr. Slavek

Footer Notes: (a) A Eucharistic Minister is clergy (Ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion). Laity are Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and should never be called Eucharistic Ministers.

(b) There is no such Mass called the Novus Ordo. The Current Mass is the Roman Missal of 2000, or the Oridinary Form of the Mass. The Tridentine Mass is the Roman Missal of 1962, or the Extraordinary Form of the Mass. Please refrain from using the term, Novus Ordo. Thanks.

(c) The titles of Acolyte and Lector belong exclusively to the Installed Offices of Acolyte and Lector, who are men (only) appointed by the Bishop. These roles performed by others are Altar Servers and Readers, respectively.
