EASTER VIGIL | John | Sunday, March 18, 2012 |
Question: Hi, Mr Slavek - |

Question Answered by Mr. Jacob Slavek
Dear John, I can't think of a reason why that particular cathedral would want to cancel its Easter Vigil, but whatever the reason I hope it's a practical one. To answer your question I know of no rule that says the vigil must be celebrated in every parish. In fact the instructions suggest that smaller parishes come together to form larger celebrations. (but wouldn't the cathedral be the ideal place for that?) The Church of course has the obligation to attend to the needs of the people, however if the bishop or pastor determines that it's not practical or possible I suppose the vigil could be omitted. Note: Google "paschalis solemnitatis" for further information, the document that gives specific instructions for the Triduum. I'm sure you'll find it interesting. :-) Mr. Slavek Footer Notes: (a) A Eucharistic Minister is clergy (Ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion). Laity are Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and should never be called Eucharistic Ministers. (b) There is no such Mass called the Novus Ordo. The Current Mass is the Roman Missal of 2000, or the Oridinary Form of the Mass. The Tridentine Mass is the Roman Missal of 1962, or the Extraordinary Form of the Mass. Please refrain from using the term, Novus Ordo. Thanks. (c) The titles of Acolyte and Lector belong exclusively to the Installed Offices of Acolyte and Lector, who are men (only) appointed by the Bishop. These roles performed by others are Altar Servers and Readers, respectively. |
