Liturgy (Blessing for Lectors) Benny Thursday, October 21, 2010

Question:

In certain places, the Lectors kneel before the Priest to take blessing before reading during the Mass. What the theological and liturgical reasons for such blessing.

Question Answered by Mr. Jacob Slavek

Dear Benny,

I'm afraid I can't comment on the blessing of lectors in the Eastern Orthodox tradition, which you have indicated as your faith tradition.

What I can say though is that in the Roman rite there is no blessing of the lector that takes place during Mass. Lectors can and should be blessed for their ministry at least occasionally, but this blessing would not take place during the Mass.

Related note: DEACONS receive a blessing immediately before they proclaim the Gospel.

Hope this helps,

Mr. Slavek

Footer Notes: (a) A Eucharistic Minister is clergy (Ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion). Laity are Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and should never be called Eucharistic Ministers.

(b) There is no such Mass called the Novus Ordo. The Current Mass is the Roman Missal of 2000, or the Oridinary Form of the Mass. The Tridentine Mass is the Roman Missal of 1962, or the Extraordinary Form of the Mass. Please refrain from using the term, Novus Ordo. Thanks.

(c) The titles of Acolyte and Lector belong exclusively to the Installed Offices of Acolyte and Lector, who are men (only) appointed by the Bishop. These roles performed by others are Altar Servers and Readers, respectively.
