Funeral Mass Chas Wednesday, February 3, 2010

Question:

Can a person having made pre-paid funeral arrangements also make arrangements for their funeral mass? Can he/her request that their funeral mass be said in Latin (not necessarily the Tridentine Mass but either that or the Mass of Paul VI) and black vestments be used instead of white? I know that in the AU rite black vestments are still used just like in the old days. For some reason I have always found that mass to be more solemn and reverent.

Thanks

Question Answered by Mr. Jacob Slavek

Dear Chas,

Sounds like reasonable requests to me, but keep in mind you may need to consider the needs of your family.  Also, there are very few priests at least that I know of that would be able to offer the Mass in Latin on a two or three day notice..  if at all.  But if your pastor is fluent in Latin, then I say go for the request, it is a decision that can be made between you, him and your family.

I think I would.  :)

Footer Notes: (a) A Eucharistic Minister is clergy (Ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion). Laity are Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and should never be called Eucharistic Ministers.

(b) There is no such Mass called the Novus Ordo. The Current Mass is the Roman Missal of 2000, or the Oridinary Form of the Mass. The Tridentine Mass is the Roman Missal of 1962, or the Extraordinary Form of the Mass. Please refrain from using the term, Novus Ordo. Thanks.

(c) The titles of Acolyte and Lector belong exclusively to the Installed Offices of Acolyte and Lector, who are men (only) appointed by the Bishop. These roles performed by others are Altar Servers and Readers, respectively.
