WORDING OF THE CONSECRATION AT MASS John Monday, October 27, 2008

Question:

In our parish, our parish priest says the exact words of consecration laid out in the Roman Missal - except for the last six words ("....DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME" where he prefaces five extra words - saying ..... "then He said to them, DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME"). I may be wrong, but it seems to me as though our parish priest is taking liberties with the form (wording) of the consecration. Would you agree, and if so, would this additional wording render the consecration invalid?

Question Answered by Mr. Jacob Slavek

Dear John,

These words are actually part of the Eucharistic Prayers for Masses with Children.  (all three of them)

Assuming that your priest is NOT using one of these prayers, then it would be an illicit addition.  The consecration would still be valid though.

Mr. Slavek

Footer Notes: (a) A Eucharistic Minister is clergy (Ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion). Laity are Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and should never be called Eucharistic Ministers.

(b) There is no such Mass called the Novus Ordo. The Current Mass is the Roman Missal of 2000, or the Oridinary Form of the Mass. The Tridentine Mass is the Roman Missal of 1962, or the Extraordinary Form of the Mass. Please refrain from using the term, Novus Ordo. Thanks.

(c) The titles of Acolyte and Lector belong exclusively to the Installed Offices of Acolyte and Lector, who are men (only) appointed by the Bishop. These roles performed by others are Altar Servers and Readers, respectively.
