Question:

Is it permitted today that the Canon be said in an inaudible manner as in the pre-Vativan II Mass?

thank you in advance.

Question Answered by Mr. Jacob Slavek

Dear Joseph,

The practice of the priest reciting the Eucharist Prayer inaudibly has not been "banned" in the new rite, although there seems to be a preference that it is said or sung aloud.  The language in the current rubrics is that it "may" be said in an audible voice.  (found immediately prior to the prefaces)  Later, during the narrative, the rubrics state that the formula is to be spoken clearly and distinctly.

So it seems to me that when the Mass is celebrated in the vernacular at least the canon should normally be recited aloud.  Is it PERMITTED to be recited inaudibly?  I don't see why not.

Mr. Slavek

Footer Notes: (a) A Eucharistic Minister is clergy (Ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion). Laity are Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and should never be called Eucharistic Ministers.

(b) There is no such Mass called the Novus Ordo. The Current Mass is the Roman Missal of 2000, or the Oridinary Form of the Mass. The Tridentine Mass is the Roman Missal of 1962, or the Extraordinary Form of the Mass. Please refrain from using the term, Novus Ordo. Thanks.

(c) The titles of Acolyte and Lector belong exclusively to the Installed Offices of Acolyte and Lector, who are men (only) appointed by the Bishop. These roles performed by others are Altar Servers and Readers, respectively.
