When does Mass end? | Charlie H | Saturday, April 28, 2007 |
Question: In the normal situation I consider the Mass to end after the Priest has left "the Church" and the Recessional Hymn is finished. We have several Priests that play CDs at various parts of the Mass when their is no choir. They often leave this music playing after they have left the church, and can run many songs. When does the Mass finish when CDs are left playing? Thank you |

Question Answered by Mr. Jacob Slavek
Dear Charlie, First of all I need to mention that I do not consider the CD playing to be liturgical since liturgical law does not allow the use of recorded music. (there is an exception in the Directory for Masses with Children, n.32) Therefore the liturgical rite is ended in your case when the people respond "Thanks be to God" and the priest leaves. Additionally there should not be any CD music at all during the Mass, if the priest absolutely must play his CDs in church for whatever reason they must be played BEFORE Mass starts of AFTER it has finished. Mr. Slavek Footer Notes: (a) A Eucharistic Minister is clergy (Ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion). Laity are Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and should never be called Eucharistic Ministers. (b) There is no such Mass called the Novus Ordo. The Current Mass is the Roman Missal of 2000, or the Oridinary Form of the Mass. The Tridentine Mass is the Roman Missal of 1962, or the Extraordinary Form of the Mass. Please refrain from using the term, Novus Ordo. Thanks. (c) The titles of Acolyte and Lector belong exclusively to the Installed Offices of Acolyte and Lector, who are men (only) appointed by the Bishop. These roles performed by others are Altar Servers and Readers, respectively. |
