Question:

Our Church celebrates confirmation when the kids are Junior in High School. My question is this. Do the kids have any rights what so ever to receive the sacrament at a younger age. My child really desires these graces. Is there any Bishop anywhere that will confirm my child?

Question Answered by Mr. Jacob Slavek

Dear Clare,

I really can't speak for the bishops, but I'm not aware of any that have done confirmation at a younger age than High School.  If you're really serious about this and will travel about the country I would try more conservative dioceses, but I really doubt that any bishop would meet you just for a weekend and confirm your child, even if he has a sponsor.  I'm sure most bishops would require some sort of religious education to determine that the child fully understands and can participate.

Mr. Slavek

Footer Notes: (a) A Eucharistic Minister is clergy (Ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion). Laity are Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and should never be called Eucharistic Ministers.

(b) There is no such Mass called the Novus Ordo. The Current Mass is the Roman Missal of 2000, or the Oridinary Form of the Mass. The Tridentine Mass is the Roman Missal of 1962, or the Extraordinary Form of the Mass. Please refrain from using the term, Novus Ordo. Thanks.

(c) The titles of Acolyte and Lector belong exclusively to the Installed Offices of Acolyte and Lector, who are men (only) appointed by the Bishop. These roles performed by others are Altar Servers and Readers, respectively.
