Question: I've heard that Martin Luther, at the end of his life, questioned leaving the Catholic faith? |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Ken: There have been many rumors about Martin Luther reconciling with the Church on his deathbed, or experssing remorse, or otherwise questioning his leaving the Catholic Church. But, I don't think he felt he left the Catholic Church, I think he felt that the Pope was leading the Church astray and he merely corrected the mistakes. But I do not know. We cannot get inside his mind. As far as I know there is no documented proof that Luther repented or was remorseful in any way on this deathbed. Unless we can find reliable original sources on this, we ought not presume this story true and certainly we should not use it in apologetics. God bless, |
