Apostle James? Kristin Sunday, January 26, 2014

Question:

Do we know anything about what happened to James after Our Lord's death? Where did he go? Was he martyred?

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OMSM(r), LTh, DD

Dear Kristen:

All of the apostles, except John, died a martyr's death. The apostle John, however, died of old age in A. D. 100 at 94 years of age.@

James the Greater, son of Zebedee, and brother of John the Apostle, if that is who you are talking about, was martyred in A. D. 44. in Judea. Tradition has it that he was the first apostle martyred, arrested with other Christians and beheaded by Herod during the persecution of the church mentioned in Acts 12:1, 2. St. Paul alludes to an apostle, probably James, who preached and ministered in Spain (Romans 15:20).@

James the Lesser, son of Alphaeus, is rarely mentioned in Scripture. He died at some unknown date in either Jerusalem or Egypt (perhaps crucified at Ostrakine in lower Egypt, where he was preaching the gospel.

Encyclopedia articles: James the Greater and James the Lessor.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
