Revised Standard Version | Clement | Tuesday, April 1, 2008 |
Question: Hi Bro, I’ve been using the Revised Standard Version (with Deutero/Apo) of the bible all these while. I came across a catholic version of RSV recently. I have a question. Is it absolutely necessary for me to get the Catholic Edition? I read that the editors have fine tuned the RSV-CE for the use of Catholics. The reason why I ask this is because I don’t want to spend unnecessary just to get another version with minor changes. Thx Bro. |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Clement: There are numerous changes made in the Catholic Edition of the Revised Standard Version. Most of these changes are relatively minor. One of the things I did years ago is to buy the cheap paperback version of the Ignatius Bible (about $14). It has a chart in the back of the changes. I ripped out that chart and inserted it into my more expensive leather-bound Bible. Since then I have made the major purchase of a leather-bound 2nd Edition Revised Standard Version-Catholic Edition. This 2nd Edition is a wonderful edition. The original RSV-CE was translated in the mid-20th century. It thus used language conventions and style of the early to mid-20th centuries. The 2nd Edition uses a more fresh language style that is commensurate with the English language of the late 20th century and 21st centuries. I am not talking about a "modern language" bible that uses "street language". This is formal English but updated from the formal English of 60-70 years ago. Language goes through changes and development. That is why the Douay-Rheims was revised in the 1800's -- we could bare read the English versions of the 17th century. I highly recommend the 2nd Edition RSV-CE. It is worth the investment. God Bless,
