Women & the Homily (Part 2) May Wednesday, August 11, 2004

Question:

Dear Bro. Ignatius Mary,

Thank you for answering my question! I have another one. What happens if a particular parish continues to have women or others not ordained priests/deacons say the homily? Also, at some parishes, after the reading of the Gospel, the priest sometimes opts to have a visitor talk about missionary work or some other cause, instead of himself saying the homily. Usually, the visitor connects the message with the homily. Sometimes, it's laity talking about their work/cause, not necessarily a priest. Or a priest/deacon leading the work/cause will also have a lay person speak. Please offer your thoughts on this.

God bless you,

May

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM+

Dear May:

You need to talk to the Priest privately about this. Take with you the General Instruction of the Roman Missal and the document on Lay Collaboration.

If the priest does not respond, then you need to contact the bishop.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
