Orders of priests | Trevor | Wednesday, March 19, 2008 |
Question: Hi Brother, I was curious as to why there are different orders of priests (eg. Jesuits, Fathers of Mercy, Oblates) and what they do differently from each other. Or is this a geographical thing? Thanks. |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Trevor: There are many religious orders in the Church. Some are priestly orders, some are non-ordained brothers, some are religious sisters. Each Order has its own particular charism, mission, and specialty. For example, some Orders were founded to be teaching Orders. Their primary mission is to teach. Other Orders are medical Orders. Their mission is to work in the medical field in hospitals and such. Still other Orders are missionary Orders who go out into the mission field. Thus, different Orders are founded because each has a different charism and mission. Then there are some Order that are contemplative. They remain cloistered, do some work like farming to support themselves, and have a primary mission of prayer and solitude. Each Order has its own particular mission and specialty. God Bless,
