St. Malachy's prophecy of the popes | John | Tuesday, February 26, 2008 |
Question: Hey brother, can you tell me any Catholic info you have regarding this propechy? I know we don't have to believe it to be saved, but what is the Catholic view on this prophecy?? This is different because it is from a SAINT, a person declared by the Church itself as holy, virtuous etc. If you had to take a wild guess, would you think this is the 2nd last pope? Also please send any Catholic information you have on "the three days of darkness". Again, I understand there is no need of these things for salvation... but I'm just curious for some more info. THANKS |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear John: Because St. Malachy is a Saint does not mean that his visions or prophecies are genuine. The issue of his private revelations are an issue apart and separate from the judgment about this Sainthood. In any event, I think that most scholars believe that the prophecies attributed to St. Malachy are a hoax, a forgery. Since the Church has not officially subscribed to this idea about the popes, I put no stock in it whatsoever. Here is a website resource on St. Malachy: As for the so-called "Three Days of Darkness" if such an event were about to happen I would think that the Vatican would warn us. The Holy See has not warned us, thus I would not worry about it. As with many alleged prophecies of this type the wackos out there have so adulterated the prophecy that who knows what it was originally. Things like -- if you look out the window you will die and that you must have blessed candles -- seem fake to me on their face. Like most prophecies, the three days that various saints have mentioned, and a time of darkness that is mentioned in the Bible has a symbolic meaning. Perhaps it relates to the time between the death and resurrection of Christ was three days of darkness? Whatever is to come before the Second Coming of Christ is probably something symbolic to that time between the death and resurrection. I don't know, but that theory sounds as good as any other. It should be noted that these prophecies relate to the end of the world, the time just before the General Judgment. We do not know the time for the Second Coming. But whenever it comes those of us who are in God's friendship have nothing to fear. In any event, we need to focus on PUBLIC REVELATION, not private revelation. By the time you finish learning everything that you need to learn from Public Revelation (the Bible and Sacred Tradition) you will be dead and will not have time for private revelation. Public revelation gives us all we need to know about the end times. Your curiosity is misplaced and can be dangerous. God Bless,
