Question:

Brother Ignatius,

I'm so tired of having to email you every time these crazy thoughts arise in my head, but i just don't know where else to turn and constantly need reassurance. Please forgive me for always having to do this.

As you know from previous questions, i struggle from Scrupulosity/OCD. My question is this...how do i know that something is just a symptom of this disorder or whether my mind really wanted to think a particular thought?

For instance, the other day at Mass, i was sitting there and during the liturgy i'm hearing in my head this nagging voice saying "Jesus isn't God" and "Maybe He was casting out demons by the power of Satan?" I immediately rejected these thoughts because they scared me and i never would want to think such things. I followed your advice and rejected them immediately, but they continue to come back. I feel like God is saying, "How could you think such things? You've committed the unforgivable sin that I spoke of in Scripture!"

It seems like a good way to describe this disorder is that it is everything that i wouldn't want to ever think actually surfaces in my mind and then i become confused as to whether or not i really willed to think it or it was an intrusive thought.

Just last week i was referred to a Priest who is a licensed Psychologist as well, so i went to him and he began recommending Yoga and Reiki and all of that stuff. I told him that i don't practice those things because they are of Satan. He was shocked. (!!!) So you see Brother, i just don't know where to turn for this disease. God Bless.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Matthew:

Sorry for the delay in responding to your question.

Matthew, no matter what the situation is, the solution is ALWAYS the same:

1) judge all things by objective reality -- what you KNOW to be true because the Church says so (not what your feelings or thoughts tell you). This means that you must learn your faith.*

2) listen to the advice of known orthodox authorities and commentators on questions that the Church may not officially speak upon.

3) reject the thoughts that run counter to #1 and #2 above. If those thoughts come back 10,000 times a day, then reject them 10,000 times a day.

* learn your faith. You will eliminate a great deal of grief if you learn your faith. For example, the it is not possible for these thoughts of yours to be the "unforgivable sin". You need to know the Church teaching on the definition of the unforgivable sin.

I am amazed at how people with OCD so quickly want to condemn themselves to hell -- an act of pure pride, buy the way.

The unforgivable sin ultimately is the rejection of God's grace of salvation upon death. If you die rejecting God, then you have committed the unforgivable sin. It is unforgivable not because God will not forgive, but because the person refuses God's forgiveness and dies in that rejection of Him.

You are not denying God's grace of forgiveness and you are not dead yet. Therefore, you do not qualify for the unforgivable sin. Sorry, there is hope for you.

As for the psychologist who recommends Reiki and Yoga, he is an idiot. Find another psychologist, or at least a psychologist who will respect your Faith on such matters and approach the therapy in a traditional manner without the New Age garbage.

God bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
