Question:

Is the "Dolorous Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ" from the meditations of Bl. Anne Catherine Emmerich legit?

By legit I mean accepted by the Catholic Church. In Mel Gibson's A Passion of the Christ, many of the Dolorous' events take place. I've read parts of it and I find it really touching (similar to the movie). Thanks for all the help!

p.s. - i love the way you answer questions using the Chatechism in some of your answers... it is the key.

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Jack:

Anne Catherine Emmerich has been made "Blessed" by Pope John Paul II in 2004, which is the last step before sainthood. In making this determination, however, the question of her visions and private revelations were not addressed. To my knowledge her private revelations have not been approved as of this date.

Because she is a "blessed" we can probably consider her private revelations with more positive reflection than others, but we must be very careful -- just because she is a blessed, does not mean that her revelations were genuine. We will have to wait on the judgment of the Church concerning that.

But, remember as it is with all private revelations, even those totally approved, that no private revelation is required for our salvation and none are required even for our belief.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
