Indwelling Holy Spirit | Mary | Sunday, January 27, 2008 |
Question: Hello again Brother, What about non Christians who are not baptised, or non believers, is the Holy Spirit absent from them? And if a person was in a state of mortal sin ,does the Holy Spirit leave them? Also I was wondering, if we receive the Holy Spirit do we receive the Trinity, and if thats the case why do we need to receive Holy Communion, if Jesus lives in us all the time. |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Mary: We receive an Indwelling of the Holy Spirit at Baptism with a further strengthening and sealing of the Holy Spirit at Confirmation. St. Ambrose wrote on the effects of confirmation said that the soul receives from the Holy Spirit: "...the spiritual seal, the Spirit of Wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and fortitude, the Spirit of knowledge and piety, the Spirit of holy fear. God the Father has sealed you, Christ the Lord has strengthened you, the mark of the Spirit has been impressed on your heart." As the Navarre Bible Commentary concludes about this, "Since Confirmation in one of the three sacraments which imprints a character on the soul (the other two are Baptism and Holy Orders), this seal remains forever." Those who are not Baptized do not have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit within them but that does not mean that the Holy Spirit ignores them. The Holy Spirit encourages a non-baptized person to believe and to convert to the Faith. While the mark of the Spirit is always on our soul, even if we go to hell, sanctifying grace departs from us if we commit mortal sin. As stated in the Catechism (1855), "Mortal sin destroys charity in the heart of man by a grave violation of God's law; it turns man away from God, who is his ultimate end and his beatitude, by preferring an inferior good to him." (CCC 1861b) "It involves the It results in the loss of charity and the privation of sanctifying grace, that is, of the state of grace." Sanctifying grace is a supernatural state of being infused by God into our soul that gives us participation in the divine life. The participation in the divine life is the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. If we lose Sanctifying grace, we lose the Holy Spirit. That is why we must seek the Sacrament of Confession when we morally sin: (CCC 1856a) "Mortal sin, by attacking the vital principle within us - that is, charity - necessitates a new initiative of God's mercy and a conversion of heart which is normally accomplished within the setting of the sacrament of reconciliation..." As to receiving the Trinity when receiving the Holy Spirit, yes, we are indwelt by God. God is one. We do not have one Person of the Trinity without the other Persons of the Trinity. The reason we are to receive the Eucharist is that the Eucharist is not just the divinity of God but the incarnated flesh of God. The Indwelling is spiritual, the Eucharist is the Body and Blood of Christ. Thus, we receive God in Spirit and in Flesh. He gives us His Spirit to sanctify us and His flesh to nourish and sustain us. God Bless,
