Books on Buddhism from a Catholic perspective Matthew Thursday, January 17, 2008

Question:

Brother Ignatius,

Someone i know is studying to be a Pastoral Counselor and for her essay this semester she has to do a study on Buddhism. I told her that it would be beneficial for her to study this subject from a Catholic perspective. Do you know of any books on Buddhism from a Catholic perspective or by a Catholic author? Thanks and God Bless.

Matthew

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Matthew:

While there are some similarities between Buddhism, especially Tibetan Buddhism, and Christianity the two religions are not compatible. Any study on this subject must focus on the striking differences inherent in the two religions.

At the moment I cannot refer you to any definitive book on this, but I did find the follow references:

Article: Catholicism and Buddhism by Anthony Clark and Carl Olson

Radio Broadcast of Catholic Answers Live: Catholicism and Buddhism with Anthony Clark

Article from National Catholic Register: Buddhism Boom

And then I found this book, which I have not read, written by a man who spent thirty years as a Buddhist and then converted to the Catholic Church:

The Unexpected Way: On Converting from Buddhism to Catholicism by Paul Williams

I hope this helps.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
