Question:

dear brother,

do you still need to confess about things you've done that you didnt find out until after you made them. there were quite a few i have made when i was little. i didn't know it was wrong until i found out.

and then when i went to make confirmation, i was sitting in a line with my fellow students. We were going to confession. Me and a few other didnt go to confess our sins because the preist said we had to eat. We were at retreat and i guess they were going by a schedule. i didn't know what to do. was that my fault? they knew that some kids didn't get to confess their sins?

i need to know his beause i'm making a list of sins that i need to confess.

Dear Suzanne:

Sorry for the delay in answering your question. I am a bit behind on my work.

I am not sure what you mean when you say "when I was little"? Before the age of around seven you are not accountable for your sins as you would not have reached the "age of accountability" (which is seven years old). You are accountable, however, for sins after the age of accountability. From around seven years of age to your First Confession any sins were absolved in the First Confession (including those sins that were sin but your did not know they were sin).

Keep in mind that any sins you committed back then that you did not know were sin cannot be counted as Mortal. For a sin to be mortal you must KNOW that it is sin at the time you commit the sin.

As for the incident at your confirmation if you did not get to confess your sins because the priest closed the confessional and sent everyone to eat, how is that your fault? That was the priest's decision, not yours. Now, I think the priest should be horse-whipped, but that is another subject.

As far as I can tell I think you are okay. If you feel unsure, talk to your confessor about this and follow his advice.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
