Angels in material form | Claire | Thursday, January 3, 2008 |
Question: Hello Br. Ignatius Mary, I understand that angels are non-corporeal, and therefore are of immaterial substance (non-substance), thus they are pure spirit form. I also understand that they do not procreate (nor could they since they are non-corporeal), however, when discussing these things with Mormans, who don't believe that and claim we were all once angels, (which I know is untrue), it was brought to my attention and questioned that if angels are non-corporeal, then how could they touch us and make physical contact with us as Scripture demonstrates, (angel helped Paul escape from jail; feet were washed in Abraham's tent) and even eat our food as was done with Abraham and Lot (Gen 18; 19:1-30)? Thank you and God bless, claire |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Claire: While angels are pure spirit and have no material/biological bodies (thus they cannot impregnate anyone), they can manipulate the material world (such as open doors, knock down walls, move objects, etc). Angels can also appear in human form and be touched, wrestle with you, eat food, grab us and guide somewhere, etc. Although they may appear in human form (which Scriptures show us) this does not remove the fact that by nature they are immaterial, non-corporeal beings. Thus, when they do appear in human form they are NOT biological bodies. While they may "eat" that food does not digest as they have no biology. That food will just simply be absorbed into their being I guess. Their appearance in human form is only an appearance (albeit an appearance that has accidental reality -- can be touched) and not a substance. Their substance in angelic. God Bless,
