John the Baptist doubted? | Matt | Sunday, December 9, 2007 |
Question: I was wondering, at the baptism of Jesus, Johns saw Him approaching, and said "behold the lamb of God" , yet later, when he was imprisoned, he asked if He was the one who was foretold, or should we expect another, did John doubt that Jesus was the Messiah? What do you think? |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Matt: John, himself, already knew Jesus to be the Messiah (Matt 3:13-17). But, there were many mistaken notions about the Messiah at the time -- such as the Messiah would be a military leader who would free the Jews from the Romans. John sent out his disciples to inquire if Jesus was the one so they could shed their mistaken notions about the kind of Messiah to expect and come to recognize Jesus. [Source: Navarre Bible Commentary] Thus, this inquiry was for the sake of John's disciples. God bless, Footer Notes: This forum is for general questions on the faith.
