Question:

Hi Brother -

Based on some of the previous comments on this topic, I have a sense that anal sex is accepted by the Catholic church and non-sinful - is this correct?

I realize that the rule of thumb is that between a married couple, so long as the man ejaculates vaginally, no sin is committed. However isn't is also a sin to do direct harm to yourself or your spouse? Anal sex can and typically does result in the following:

1) Anal tearing, which can lead to hemorrhaging and rectal infections
2) Prostate infections resulting from secretion of fecal matter into the urethra
3) Vaginal infections resulting from vaginal intercourse AFTER anal intercourse.

These are the big ones, known full well by the medical community and conveniently swept under the rug by the gay and lesbian agenda. This is an incredibly unhealthy behavior for a man and woman to engage in, so much so that I can't help but think it is similar to deliberate harm upon yourself.

The question is, at what point does something that is dangerous for us to do become sinful to do?

Dear Jonathan:

I am afraid you are exaggerating the dangers of this practice -- at least when this sexual practice is occasional. The side effects you mentioned are present normally in people who participate in this sex practice on a regular and frequent basis. This would be seen with homosexuals, but an occasional participation by marriage partners will not likely result in these side-effects.

In any event, I will quote Father Most, may he rest in peace. When I was first asked this question I contacted Fr. Most for the answer. He said, "It is not pretty, but it is permissible" as long as the man does not ejaculate.

Where the lines are drawn as to self-destructive or dangerous behavior is mostly a matter of personal conscience. The Church teaches moderation but does not give a precise line where moderation is breached.

Some people think eating a single donut is gluttony. That is rather scrupulous. Drinking Coca Cola is not good for you. Watching a lot of TV is not good for you. Smoking is not good for you. Living in Los Angeles is not good for you. But none of these things are in-and-of-themselves sinful.

Sky Diving is far more dangerous than anal sex. Is it sinful to sky dive?

There is no solid line to determine where the line is drawn for when something is too dangerous or too bad for you. It all depends on many factors, personal and objective, to determine this.

But on an objective moral basis, given mutual consent, given the man does not ejaculate, anal sex is permitted, but is certainly not prudent and is rather nasty.

Shakespeare, I believe it was, called buggery dealing with the "devil's porthole."

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
