Fear Of Death Bryon Tuesday, October 30, 2007

Question:

When I was a young child, I used to be afraid of death. I would black out and just imagine going to Heaven, but having no feeling whatsoever. That fear has just recently come back to haunt me. I have no idea as to what Heaven is going to be like. Will I have emotion, personality, or will I be walking around like a good looking zombie praising God? If I do have my same personality and emotion as I do now, will I get to do whatever I want, like play a little one-on-one with Jesus or play checkers against St. Peter? This has always been a big fear of mine, and I know I can't escape inevitable death, but I would like to know what the life thereafter will be like exactly. Thank You And God Bless!!!

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear Bryon:

No one on this earth knows EXACTLY what it is like in the afterlife. That is why there are so many people involved in the occult (tarot cards, Ouija board, séances, etc.) -- to try to find out. Trying to find out in that way, of course, does not actually gain anyone any real information about the afterlife; it only invites demonic bondage and harassment.

All we know is what the Bible, the Saints, and the Church has told us. Heaven will be a place of rest from the cares and worries of this world. It will be a place of unimaginable beauty. We will be in the warmth of the Light and Love of God. His light and His love will infuse within us and around us like a warm toasty blanket on a cold morning. It will be bliss and paradise.

Beyond that we do not know. The Bible talks about a new earth, so maybe after the resurrection of our bodies we will live in a place like the Garden of Eden in unparalleled beauty of a perfect garden with trees and waterfalls and forest animals and such. We do not know.

It is enough to know that we will be with God forever immersed in the warmth of His perfect love.

As for our personalities, we will not be zombies. God did not create us zombies, he created us a unique individuals with unique personalities. We will still have our unique personalities but they will be healed and perfected. We will no longer have any negative aspects to our personalities, no quirks, no dysfunctions, no pride, no concupiscence (sinful tendencies). Our personalities will be perfected and glorified as will our bodies at the resurrection.

We will be who we are, but will be a perfect us. We will recognize each other as who we are but, again, a perfect version of who we are.

There will be no pain, no suffering, no insecurities, no dysfunctions, no personality problems. When we enter heaven we will be perfected and live in bliss with God forever.

As for what will we do in heaven. Well, we will worship God, of course; that is a given. As to what else we do not know, but sure, there is no reason to doubt that we could not play checkers with St. Peter. Whatever we will do in heaven it will be great, it will be perfect, it will be TOTALLY satisfying.

Be not afraid. If we die in God's friendship what we will experience will be wonderful and glorious. We will be us, truly us, like we have never known on this earth. For the first time we will be all that we can be and more.

God Bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
