Question: Hello: However, my question was what is a person who is completely unable to receive the sacrament of confession to do in order to have the mortal sin removed? It is too lengthy to go into why the person can not receive the sacrament, just that they are unable to do so. |

Dear Jane: My last post answered this question. If the person has some canonical impediment whereby they are not able to receive the Sacraments (which means they can receive none of the Sacraments including the Eucharist) then the person can make a Act of Perfect Confession. He must offer an Act of Perfect Contrition for all mortal sins with a firm purpose of amendment to not do it again, and a firm promise to seek the Sacrament of Confession whenever it becomes possible. He must also not receive the Eucharist until such time as he is able to attend the Sacrament of Confession. As already mentioned in the previous post there should not be a problem offering Perfect Contrition. Imperfect Contrition WILL NOT remit mortal sin, so he will need to offer Perfect Contrition. There is no other option to remove mortal sin once mortal sin is attached to a soul. The only other possibility is that grave sin committed by the person is not attached to the soul as mortal in the first place by reason of invincible ignorance or diminished responsibility. This is where a person committing a grave sin is not held accountable to one degree or another and thus the grave sin is not counted as mortal to their soul. Only God can truly judge this. It would not be prudent for a person to presume this diminished responsibility upon himself. Your friend thus needs to make Perfect Contrition.
