sacrament of marriage June Friday, October 26, 2007

Question:

Dear Br. Ignatius,

My husband and I were married in the Catholic Church in 1971. He was a baptized and confirmed Catholic. I was protestant but not baptized. The Monsignor who had known my husband his whole life counseled us and married us. My husband did not go to confession before our marriage as he was not an active Catholic at that time (however it was very important to him to be married in the Church, although I didn't understand that at the time).

Anyway, when I went through RCIA, the director told me that our marriage became valid and a sacrament at the time of my baptism (in a protestant church) in 1986. Do I need to do anything else regarding our marriage before I am confirmed in the Catholic Church?

Thank you for your response to "Eucharist before confirmation". I went to my priest yesterday and we had a long talk and he is working on getting me some private instruction so I can be confirmed very soon. I cried like a baby over having to refrain from receiving the holy sacrament of the Eucharist, but I understand now that I should have been confirmed first. I did make a very thorough first confession before receiving, fasted, did my penance and felt that I was in a state of grace. I was certainly not trying to do something so very wrong. My priest prayed with me and he told me that it wouldn't be very long before I could once again receive. Please pray for my patience as I will.
Thank you and God bless you,
June

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM

Dear June:

Since you were married in the Church, as far as I know, now that you are baptized, there is nothing else that is needed, but to be on the safe side you ought to ask your pastor.

I am glad that you went to see your pastor about confirmation, I know it is a sacrifice to refrain from receiving the Eucharist, but as the old saying goes, "True Love Waits" which makes the moment that you are able to partake of our Lord even more sweet.

I also praise God for your devotion to the Eucharist. I wish more people had your love and devotion to our Lord in the Eucharist.

Welcome to the Church, and it will not be long for you to be in full communion and able to partake of the full Sacramental life.

God bless,
Bro. Ignatius Mary
