Blessed palms | Linda | Sunday, August 5, 2007 |
Question: Dear Bro. Ignatius; I know in the past you have said that when a blessed object like a rosary is broken and doesn't resemble a rosary anymore, the blessing is removed. Does this apply to bless palms? Each Palm Sunday after the palms are given out, there are always pieces or strings of palms left on the floor of the church. This also happens around the home after the palms dry out. Are these pieces/strings of palms to be treated as sacramentals and gathered up or do they lose the blessing and can be just thrown out? |

Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Linda: Palm fragments are still blessed, in my opinion, as long as the fragment is still recognizable as coming from a Palm. So unless the palm fragments are little crumbs, I think that the blessing still applies. That is only my opinion. In any event, I would burn the remnants of the palm and not just throw them away. Of course, if finished with the whole palm leaf, it should be burned. God Bless, Footer Notes: This forum is for general questions on the faith.
