Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Mary: Dorothy Day was proposed for sainthood in 1983 by the Claretian Missionaries. John Paul II open her casue in March 2000, which gives her the title of "Servant of God." Servant of God is the first step on the road to sainthood and is given when the Holy See gives permission to open her cause. The second step is that of title of "Venerable" granted when proof of heroic virtue or martyrdom is established. The third step is that of Beatification, which gives the title of "Blessed" and is granted after confirmation of miracles attributed to the person are established. The fourth step is canonization as a Saint. Dorothy Day is in the first step. I think this website is one for her cause: click here Footer Notes: This forum is for general questions on the faith.
