Question Answered by Bro. Ignatius Mary, OLSM
Dear Ken: Medicine is a gift from God. As such we can and should avail ourselves of the proper medicine for the proper diagnosis. Medicine itself is morally neutral, the problem is in the application of the medicine. There are applications that are immoral, such as the abortion pill, contraceptives, using drugs for suicide, drug abuse, etc. Depression can range from a mild melancholy to a severe Clinical depression. Milder forms of depression may go away by doing things like exercising. Exercise effects brain chemicals in much the same way as anti-depressant drugs. Thus, becoming active and exercising the body may resolve some mild depressions. These kinds of mild depressions will often resolve themselves within three months. More serious depressions that can be clinical diagnosed will likely need medication to resolve. You need to discuss all this with your doctor and take his advice.
